House Comes Together to Support Radel's Commonsense Anti-Spending Amendment

Press Release

Date: June 20, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today, the House passed Congressman Trey Radel's (FL-19) commonsense anti-spending amendment to the Federal Agriculture Reform and Risk Management (FARRM) Act which eliminates $50 million in funding for the National Sheep Industry Improvement Center (NSIIC).

"I came to Washington to challenge the status quo, and I am encouraged to see my colleagues on both sides of the aisle taking a stand against politics as usual," said Rep. Radel. "In today's economy every dollar counts and we should be looking for savings by eliminating bloated programs such as the National Sheep Industry Improvement Center. Today we stopped throwing away your hard earned money on sheep shearing- a profession perfected during Biblical times."

"It's hard not to joke about eliminating such an absurd program, but fleecing the taxpayers is no laughing matter," said Club for Growth President Chris Chocola.

Previous projects that have been funded through the NSIIC include:

- Grant for beginner sheep shearers to have free combs, brushes, razors and scissors.
- Grant for a social media campaign to "create "buzz' among consumers" about lamb.
- Funding for an information best practices video describing recommended goat handling practices.
- Junket to Australia for the "Tri-Lambs" to get people to eat lamb.
